At your first visit, rest assured that we will take our time to discuss your needs and concerns with you. As a new patient coming to our office, we will take x-rays so that you are ensured a comprehensive exam. We will check your gum tissue health and check for cavities. We also take the time to complete an oral cancer screening, not only at your first visit, but every hygiene visit thereafter. We do this by looking and feeling for anything abnormal in your cheeks, on or under your tongue, in your throat, and on the outside of your face. At this time, we also check for signs and symptoms of things you may not be aware of, such as grinding your teeth or acid reflux problems.
If possible, we will also do your cleaning at this appointment. If you have a large amount of calculus/tartar build-up or gum disease, we may not be able to complete your cleaning at this time, or even in one visit. We do this to make sure you get the best cleaning possible, as leaving build-up behind can cause infection or other problems. We offer fluoride treatments to every patient, including adults, because studies have shown that topical fluoride as applied in a dental setting can reduce cavities up to 75%!! It also helps with sensitivity, which is a nice benefit!
And that's it! Now that you know what to expect, we hope to see you soon. Of course, if you have any questions that we did not answer, you can always call our office at 804-717-5400 and we will try our best to answer any questions you may have.
